Demo is an exhibition composed of found, adapted and hand-made objects in different eclectic constellations. These works form a complete whole, in that the disparate works are in fact one work; Demo. This body of work was initially exhibited at South London Gallery as part of a composing residency Hughes completed this year. For this exhibition at SLG Sarah responded to the site in London, revealing the buildings history and social impact of the gallery in the area. Demo displays a diverse collection of techniques and materials such as marquetry and jesmonite, made possible by the rich resources and workshops available at West Dean College, where Sarah works as a Research Assistant and Lecturer. For Demo Hughes has re-purposed and re-aligned different compositions of these works in order to create a new exhibition speci cally for CASS. She has also introduced new elements, such as readymade toy horses covered in pink paint, in order to respond to the history of CASS and previous commissioned works, such as Michael Joo’s sculpture previously in the grounds; Doppelganger. In addition to this exhibition there will be a publication by Sarah Hughes in collaboration with David Stent, and a newly released CD of Sarah’s compositional work, available to buy in the visitor services centre at CASS.
