'Tony Cragg at Exhibition Road' is the first large-scale public exhibition of the British sculptor Tony Cragg in London. Early on in his career, while studying at the nearby Royal College of Art, he found inspiration in the collections of the Natural History Museum, Science Museum and the V&A. Today that influence is still present in his work. In the pieces on view in this exhibition, motifs from science and nature appear alongside references to classical sculpture. Cragg’s sculptures bring together the contrasts of artistic abstraction and figuration to produce forms that are extraordinary and yet somehow familiar. The titles encapsulate both form and feeling.
Five major new outdoor sculptures have been installed along Exhibition Road and a number of indoor works are on display at the V&A, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum. The exhibition is part of the London 2012 Festival, a 12 week UK-wide celebration in 2012 featuring leading artists from the UK and around the world.
