CASS Collection

Each year the curatorial team at CASS invites a selection of artists to submit sculpture proposals in the form of a maquette and work on paper, kept in perpetuity in our Permanent Collection. To date CASS has worked with over 300 artists and therefore its collection represents a fascinating survey of contemporary sculpture of the last 25 years.

The maquettes and works on paper represent a key stage in the process of commissioning sculpture, marking the moment when abstract ideas materialise into physical form and visual representation.  The maquettes also function as ‘think pieces’, allowing the artist to work through technical and aesthetic issues, experiment with materials, and make adjustments to scale and structure.

The works on paper offer a fascinating insight into artists’ approaches. Some are minimal and technical, while others are more abstract and expressive and very much artworks in their own right. Some are drawn in charcoal, ink or pencil, while others take the forms of watercolours, paintings or multi-media collages.

CASS also holds a unique Archive that provides a rich, in-depth insight into the history of the Foundation and the commissioning and artistic process. It includes correspondence, artist sketches, photographs, as well as documentation relating to the fabrication, sale and exhibition of works, press cuttings, ephemera, publications and audio-visual material.
